Help in Choosing a Private Attorney

The majority of the time, when people are arrested and appear before a judge at first appearance, they are appointed a public defender. Often, however, the defendant feels it is in his or her best interest to have a private criminal defense attorney. The question is, how does a person pick an attorney?

Certainly, you can ask friends or family members for recommendations, or you can look in the phone book (under "Attorneys-Criminal Law"). Most attorneys will talk to you initially at no charge-- be sure to ask them first!

You can also check the internet for criminal attorney recommendations at the Martindale Hubbell site (click on lawyer.com and enter practice area, such as criminal, as well as the city and state). You can also go to the Westlaw Legal Directory. If you have any other questions about attorneys who practice in the state of Florida, visit the Florida Bar Association site.
